God is not silent and has never been silent, but is speaking in His universe. The written Word is effective because, and only because, the Living Word is speaking in heaven and the Living Voice is sounding in the earth. “And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.  A. W.Tozer

If the written word were truly the living Word, there would be no reason for God to yet speak, for the “living scriptures” would do it all.  God did not supplant Himself with the bible, nor did He intend it to be consulted instead of Him.  It is one of His methods where He communicates His mind and men’s history with Him.

If God were not yet speaking and presently imparting life to the scriptures, they would be without life and power.  The scriptures do not transform anyone,  It is only when His life joins them that they avail much.

You think you know truth. People memorize the Scriptures by the yard, but that is not a guarantee of knowing the truth. Truth is not a text. Truth is in the text, but it takes the text plus the Holy Spirit to bring truth to a human soul. A person can memorize a text, but the truth must come from the Holy Spirit through the text. Faith comes by hearing the Word, but faith is also the gift of God by the Holy Spirit.  A.W. Tozer

The scriptures must be made more than words on a page in order for communication and benefit may be imparted.  It is the Holy Spirit which brings life to the scriptures.  So why are we honoring the bible more than the Holy Spirit?  Why do we not say, “Let us seek wisdom and life from the Spirit as we turn to scripture”?  Rather,  we say, “let us turn to the Word of God”, and then they read mere words.

A loving Personality dominates the Bible, walking among the trees of the garden and breathing fragrance over every scene. Always a living Person is present, speaking, pleading, loving, working and manifesting Himself whenever and wherever His people have the receptivity necessary to receive the manifestation.  A.W. Tozer

In deifying the bible and calling it by the same Name that God gives to the Son of God and to none other, we demean God, we take our focus off Him.  We say it leads us to Him, and it does.  But why fixate on the path to Him, instead of He Who is our Guide and our Destination?

Almost every time the scripture writer used the word, “word”in their writings, they are referring to utterance, speech, word – something spoken by a living Being.  It is not a mere quotation in a book, not paper and ink, but its reference is always to the One speaking and speaking.  Since the bible has been labled the Word of God, it has mostly eclipsed the reality of God speaking.

Two scriptures that show the travesty of relegating “word” to only the written word are”

Ps 138:2  I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word [Your speaking, what You say] above all thy name.

Ps 119:11  Thy word [Your speaking, what You say]  have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

These were personal communications to the writer.  When it may encompass what it written, we must not lose sight of the fact that it was the speaking that brought forth the writing.  The writer was always focused on the One speaking, and it is the One speaking that makes what is written valuable.  Since the labeling of the bible as the Word of God, the focus has shifted from the speaker to the words that are recorded, and those words have been given the same power as its speaker.  That seems like idolatry to me, in the same way that the snake raise on the staff in the wilderness.

Now, the mindset is to learn the words of scripture, instead of knowing the One Who spoke those scriptures.  The scriptures were meant to introduce us to the Speaker, and to provide His specific words by which to assess His present speaking.  The recorded scriptures are critical and must not be neglected,  But, their only value is as they cause us to interact with the Speaker.
