WARNING:

It can be very frustrating to realize just how far we have fallen short and the journey back to obedience seems impossible. It is meant to be impossible.

What is impossible with man is possible with God. Mark 10:27. It is only possible to those who are willing to become totally dependent on Him, and cooperate with God as He works His will in us.  The first step is to admit our waywardness and false sense of spiritual “in tuneness”

There is only one reason why we sin and do not walk in the Spirit. But it results in many other sins.

But, this article is not about sin, it is about walking in the Spirit and the fullness of His power and authority and walking in the freedom from sin.

Mar_12:30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. Deut 6:5

Matt 22:36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

If we break that commandment, all others are easy to break. If we keep the first, all others will automatically be kept. The proof that we are not keeping the first commandment is when others are broken.

I did not include the second commandment because it is an understood corollary of the first. For if we love God we will love what and who He loves.

And there seems to be only one reason why we do not have that love for Him

Deu_30:6 And the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live.

God promises that He will make it possible to love Him like that. For we know not the way nor do we have the power to do it even if we knew the way.

The entire problem comes because we will not let Him cut away (circumcise) those fleshy and soulish parts of us that love other things.

Put simply, we love too many things of the world, the flesh, and the devil.

Below I will enumerate the evils that flow from our refusal to be circumcised. All would be well and the church would be all that it is supposed to be if we would allow and insist and believe that God can and will cut away all that prevents our complete love for Him. Rather than letting Him whittle away at it as we begrudgingly give up a little at a time. We must press in and ask Him to move quickly for the days are short.

Heb 12:5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:

Heb 12:6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

Heb 12:7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?

Heb 12:8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.

It is circumcision that is going on in John_15:2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.

The branch may be lush with leaves and look very healthy and alive, but it is like the fig tree that Jesus cursed. We must let and insist that God prunes even that which is our treasure and most dear to our heart.

The primary reason why diligent seekers do not see signs and wonders is that we do not love God TOTALLY. We listen to too many voices

Rom_10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Heb 4:12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

Mt 11:15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Mark 4:14 The sower soweth the word.  15 And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts.  16 And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness;  17 And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word’s sake, immediately they are offended.  18 And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word,  19 And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.  20 And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirty fold, some sixty, and some an hundred.

Lu 12:19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.

MAKING EXCUSES

Lu 14:18 And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused. 19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused. 20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.

I have cleaning/laundry to do, that light bulb needs to be replaced, I have to fix the screen door, I have to work on my car. I am too busy, I have made other plans

What is more important or urgent than hearing His voice and restoring the church to its original intention?

Can’t those with jobs give up even a weekend?

we love this world too much

1Jo 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

1Jo 5:4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

Col 3:1 ¶ If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. 2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

Jas 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

Joh 15:19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. Does the world love you or hate you?

Ga 1:10 For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.

GENERALLY

We do not see Him as omnipotent – we act as if satan has power against Him or His word. We proclaim Him as a lamb and not a king.

Ge 1:1 ¶ In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

Heb_11:3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
Joh 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

Lu 19:38 Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.

Mat 25:24 He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed,

Psa_33:6 By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.

Rev 20:7 And when the thousand years are ended, Satan will be released from his prison 8 and will come out to deceive the nations that are at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them for battle; their number is like the sand of the sea. 9 And they marched up over the broad plain of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city, but fire came down from heaven and consumed them, 10 and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

We are not TRUE disciples (According to Jesus’ definition)

Jesus’ definition strikes at the heart of the first commandment. It is basically an exposition of what loving God with ALL our being looks like and the test of whether our love is TOTAL.

Lu 14:26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father,

and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

Lu 14:27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

Lu 14:33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

Lu 18:29 And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the kingdom of God’s sake, 30 Who shall not receive manifold more in this present time, and in the world to come life everlasting.

Joh 7:7 The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.

Lu 10:16 He that heareth you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me.

Mt 16:24 ¶ Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

Mr 8:34 And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

Mr 10:21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.

Lu 9:23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

We do not believe that we are to live by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. We don’t believe that God speaks anymore as He did throughout scripture

Jesus believed it and lived it.

John 5:19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

John 5:30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

John 8:28 Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.

and we are His body. Shall we now change how God directed Jesus?

That is what walking in the Spirit and by the Spirit IS.

But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Luke 4:4 Matthew 4:4

John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

Joh 10:3 To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. 4 And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.

Heb 3:7 ¶ Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,

Isaiah 30:21 And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.

Jeremiah 13:10 This evil people, which refuse to hear my words, which walk in the imagination of their heart, and walk after other gods, to serve them, and to worship them, shall even be as this girdle, which is good for nothing.

Re 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if anyman hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. Spoken to the church

We don’t speak His words so He does not confirm them

We don’t do anymore than Satan did in the wilderness with Jesus when Jesus answered his quotations of scripture with

Matthew 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Deut 8:3
Revealing that it takes more than the written scripture, Those quoting scripture also have to have it come by the mouth of God. Satan knew scripture, but it did not come from God and was misapplied to the situation.

Mr 16:20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

1Co 2:4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:

1Co 2:1 ¶ And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. 2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

2Pe 1:16 ¶ For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

Mt 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

1Co 5:4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,

Ac 4:29 And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word, 30 By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus.

Heb 2:4 God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?

Ac 14:3 Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony unto the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands.

Ac 19:11 And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:

Ac 19:12 So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.

Ro 15:18 For I will not dare to speak of any of those things which Christ hath not wrought by me, to make the Gentiles obedient, by word and deed,

Ro 15:19 Through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God; so that from Jerusalem, and round about unto Illyricum, I have fully preached the gospel of Christ.

Ac 15:12 Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them.

Mt 16:19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

1Co 5:4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, 5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

Ac 2:22 Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:

Ac 2:43 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.

Ac 5:12 ¶ And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon’s porch.

Ac 5:15 Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them.

Ac 5:16 There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one.

Ac 5:16 There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one.

Ac 6:8 ¶ And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.

Joh 14:10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. If we speak his words, He will do the works

Signs and wonders were the hallmark of His ministry while on earth, we are His body on earth

Mt 4:24 And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.

Mt 8:16 When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:

Mt 15:30 And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus’ feet; and he healed them:

Mt 15:31 Insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel.

Mr 6:56 And whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole.

Mt 10:8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.

Mt 11:5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.

We don’t believe Him regarding significant things He has said.

Philippians 3:9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:
We still focus on behavior and changing behavior is a major focus of the church. Scripture tells us to strengthen our faith.

Mat_21:21 Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.

1Co_15:56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.
We keep teaching the law, instead of faith and walking in the Spirit

Gal_5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
Rather, we teach Do not fulfill the lust of the flesh and you will be Walking in the Spirit,

1Jn_3:8b For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
We do not believe that they are destroyed

2Co 2:14 Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.

Mar_16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

Mat 10:7 And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. 8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.

Mat 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach [same root as “disciple”] all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
And what things did Jesus teach them?

We do not believe that signs and wonders are essential to proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom.

Joh 15:24 If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father. Signs are for a witness
Joh
12:37 ¶ But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him:

Signs, wonders, and miracles are meant to bring repentance

Mt 11:21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
Mt 11:23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.

And to promote belief in Jesus as the Christ

Lu 19:37 And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen;

Joh 10:37 If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not.

And to verify His sent ones

2 kings 5:7 And it came to pass, when the king of Israel had read the letter, that he rent his clothes, and said, Am I God, to kill and to make alive, that this man doth send unto me to recover a man of his leprosy? wherefore consider, I pray you, and see how he seeketh a quarrel against me. 8 And it was so, when Elisha the man of God had heard that the king of Israel had rent his clothes, that he sent to the king, saying, Wherefore hast thou rent thy clothes? let him come now to me, and he shall know that there is a prophet in Israel. Known because he healed leprosy

There is no instance when Jesus sent them out to preach that He did not also tell them to heal and cast out demons

Lu 4:27 And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian.

Lu 7:22 Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.

Mt 10:1 ¶ And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.

Mr 16:18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

Lu 10:9 And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. Signs are proof that the kingdom is being proclaimed and represented

Ac 5:12 ¶ And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon’s porch.

Not for the apostles only

1Co 12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. 8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: 11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

1Co 12:28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. 17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

Joh 14:12 ¶ Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

He HAS already given us all things that pertain to life and godliness and has already made us dead in Him and alive in Him. Paul tells us of that struggle in Romans 7 and the way of victory.

For a good understanding of what the process looks like, read THE BREAKING OF THE OUTER MAN AND THE RELEASE OF THE SPIRIT by Watchman Nee.

Others like Andrew Murray and Art Katz have also written very good description of the process, but I find Nee’s to be the most brutally honest.   Even though Job declared, “though He slay me, yet will I trust Him” Job 13:15  He also said earlier, “If I called and He answered me, I would not believe that He was listening to my voice. For He crushes me with a tempest, and multiplies my wounds without cause” (Job 9:16-17).  Expect those same kinds of thoughts during the experiences He will bring you through (it will not seem like He is bringing you through anything, but only destroying you at the core of your being).

Keep in mind what Paul said

Philippians 3:8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,

When we have that same mindset and are willing to be circumcized of all that is  not of Him, then we, too, will walk in the ways of power and authority because we know Him.

It is this trial of faith which is more precious than gold and when you come through its fire, there will be more of Him and less of the former you.

The way of victory is two-fold

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

2 Corinthians 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

We must ever be   Proving/testing all things; hold fast that which is good 1Th_5:21 and believing not every spirit, but trying the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world 1 John 4:1.   And most of the time, we will not know which is which because satan will not blatantly violate scripture and make His wiles obvious.

The most effected tactic I have found after years of “trying to figure it out” and “pray it through” is to simply say, “Lord God, I choose you”.  Which means that whatever way is His, that is the way I choose.  It is at once resisting the devil and simultaneously submitting to God.
